Russian newspaper reveals “behind the scenes” of the Gulf moves towards President Assad

A Russian newspaper saw that the Gulf States no longer put the legitimacy of the Syrian government at question.

“NizavisimayaGazeta” newspaper said that UAE is talking with the Syrian authorities about the resumption of the work of its embassy in the Syrian Arab Republic, noting that Abu Dhabi is conducting these talks with the knowledge of the Saudi authorities.UAE diplomatic mission left Syria in February 2012, when the Gulf Cooperation Council decided to cut ties with Syria.

The newspaper said that Russian Ambassador Alexander Axenyounuk had confirmed the talks on resuming the work of the UAE embassy in Syria and linked it to Syria’s return to the Arab world, and quoted him saying: “if the intention was to resume diplomatic relations, it would mean the legitimacy of the Syrian government (…) The meeting between the Syrian and Bahraini foreign ministers on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York was part of the preparations for the restoration of Syrian-Saudi relations”.
